Jacob is on the run, having received his father's blessing instead of his brother Esau. He seeks refuge with his uncle, Laban. On the way, in Haran, he stops for the night where he has a dream which calms his fears and shows him God's presence. Soon after, he meets Laban's daughter Rachel. He is tricked by Laban into marrying Rachel's older sister, Leah. Only after seven years does he marry Rachel. After much exploitation Jacob and his family leave.

Jacob's dream:
The figure of Jacob sleeping is taken from the painting "Mars and Venus" by early Renaissance Italian painter Sandro Botticelli 1445-1510.
